Portfolio Modeler Resource Plan

This article explains how to access and use the Resource Plan from within the Portfolio Modeler.

The Resource Plan is available from within the Portfolio Modeler to view your resource availability while creating your optimal scenarios.

Note

If you do not select a resource plan cost type when creating the model, then the resource plan options will not show in the model.

Click on the Resource Plan icon to open the Resource Plan pane in the bottom half of the screen.

Note

By default, the Resource Plans panel displays resource availability and allocation data for all “In” plans. This view helps you assess whether your current portfolio is feasible given your team’s capacity.

Units Selection

To choose how resource allocations are displayed in your plan:

  1. In the Resources panel toolbar, click the Units menu on the far left.

  2. Select the unit format you prefer for viewing resource allocations:

    • Hours – shows the number of hours assigned.

    • % (Percent) – shows the percentage of a resource’s availability that is allocated.

    • FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) – shows allocation based on a full-time workload.

Resource Plan Type Selection

To choose which type of resource plan to view, click the Resources Plan Type menu and select the desired type from the drop-down. The available options are based on the Cost Types configured in your model settings.

Dates Selection

Set the dates and level of detail displayed in then resource plan.

  1. Click the Dates menu in the Resources panel.

  2. Choose your preferred level of detail to diaplay financial data: Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly.

  3. Select pre-configured date ranges, or set a Custom date range to display in the Resources panel.

Data Selection

When loading the modeler, only resources used in the 'in" plans will be shown by default. You can use the options in the Data Selection model to load in desired resources.

You can use the data selection option to show all resources if needed.

You can also choose to show all plans, or just the "in" plans data.

You can also filter on the status of each resource booking (proposed vs committed vs draft).

Note

The Draft Plan Lines filter allows users to view and plan draft bookings during early planning phases without requiring submission, helping teams collaborate before formal resource negotiations begin.

Note

To access the Draft Plan Lines filter, Resource Negotiations need to be enabled by your OnePlan Administrator.

Group Resources

Grouping helps you view and manage resources more easily by organizing them into meaningful categories. To group resources in the Resources panel:

  1. Click the Group By icon in the toolbar at the top of the Resources panel.

  2. Choose a field to group your resources by (like Business Unit or Role).

Filter Resources

Filtering the Resources panel helps you narrow down the list of resources so you can focus on the ones that meet specific criteria. To filter resources in the Resources panel:

  1. Click the Filter icon in the toolbar at the top of the Resources panel.

  2. Choose the field you want to filter by (e.g. Name, Business Unit, Role).

  3. Set the value or condition you want to use for filtering.

Charts

You can use the resource capacity vs demand chart to better visualize availability.

Click the Charts icon to open the drop down. Then select the chart you would like to view. Options include:

  • List: Opens the default resource plan grid view.

  • Capacity vs Demand: Opens a stacked bar chart showing resource capacity against demand over a selected time period. The line at the top represents the total capacity of the resources assigned to the projects in the model, and the bars below show the actual resource demand (assigned hours) on the projects included in the model.

    Note

    The resource capacity vs demand chart will update in real-time as you move plans in / out or drag and drop to a different estimated start date.

Export the Resource Plan

You can export the resource plan grid data to excel (XLSX or CSV).

Click on the Export icon to open the drop down. Then select the format you would like to export the resource plan to.

Add or Remove Columns in the Resources Panel

You can add in additional fields to the Resources panel to gain clearer insight into resource allocations. To customize the columns in the Resources panel:

  1. Hover over any column header on the left side of the separator bar in the Resources panel.

  2. Click the small arrow that appears to open a drop-down menu.

  3. Select Columns.

  4. In the list that appears:

    • Check the the columns you want to display.

    • Uncheck the columns you want to hide.

You can also drag the separator bar to adjust the layout of the Resources panel, making it easier to view all the columns you need.
