What Is Plan Details in OnePlan?

Plan Details in OnePlan is the form where plan managers enter all metadata for a given plan. The metadata entered into Plan Details directly impacts rollup values shown in the Work Plan and in reports, so the more complete the information in Plan Details, the more accurate downstream reporting and rollups will be. Beyond metadata, Plan Details is designed to be the central repository for all information related to a plan, including documentation.

What you will understand After reading this article, you will understand what Plan Details is in OnePlan, how to access and navigate a Plan Details form, and how it fits into the broader planning and reporting picture.

How Plan Details Works in OnePlan

Each plan type in OnePlan has its own Plan Details form, and the form itself can differ depending on the kind of plan and how your organization has configured it. As a plan progresses through its process steps, the Plan Details form can change to show the fields relevant to that stage.

Context: Multiple Pages and Large Datasets

Plan Details forms can include multiple pages, letting administrators organize related fields into separate sections so users aren’t required to view every field on a single page. This also helps Plan Details scale to plans with large amounts of data by distributing fields across pages, keeping the form experience focused on what’s relevant to the current task.

Context: Accessing Plan Details

You can open Plan Details for a plan from the Plans panel on the OnePlan home page (select the quick edit menu next to a plan and choose Details), from the My Portfolio area (select the quick edit menu next to a plan and choose Details), or by using the Quick Edit menu to open Plan Details in a pop-out window.

Key Components of Plan Details

Plan Details Overview.png

  1. Plan Actions Icons The row of icons next to the plan name at the top of Plan Details, offering quick access to actions such as Shared With, Add Favorite, Comments, Dependencies, Connected Systems, and Automations options for the plan.

  2. Planning Modules The set of modules available within a plan, shown as tabs at the top right of Plan Details: Details (plan metadata), Financials (financial planning and monitoring), Resource Plan (resource assignment and management), Work Plan (execution tracking), and Reporting (Status Reports, Insights, Visualizer, and Dashboards).

  3. Plan Details Tabs Sub-tabs within the Details module: Overview (this is the default tab, in every Plan Details form, the main Plan Details form and its sections/fields). Other examples of Plan Details Tabs include Business Case (the plan’s business justification), RAID (Risks, Actions, Issues, and Decisions logged against the plan), and Associations (other plans, programs, or portfolios linked to this plan).

  4. Process Steps Customizable stages a plan moves through, shown as a horizontal stepper (for example, Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring, Closure). The Plan Details form changes to show the fields relevant to the current stage — for example, a Plan step might show Project Information, Associated Key Results, Business Case, Schedule, and Financials, while a Manage step might show Project Prioritization, Project Health, and Project Trending instead. The Process Step Log icon (next to the stepper) opens a record of the plan’s progress through each process step, and process steps can be enhanced and automated with Microsoft Power Automate.

  5. Form Sections and Fields The body of the Plan Details form, organized into collapsible sections (such as Project Information, Project Schedule, Project Financials, Project Benefits, Project Effort, and Project Health) that group related fields together.

Plan Details forms use several field types: plan fields (independent, directly entered values like Name, Description, or Estimated Start), summary fields (aggregate data from plan fields below them, such as % Done, Actual Cost, or Remaining Effort), split fields (split plan costs between parent plans), and trend fields (show whether key metrics are improving over time).

  6. Related Plans An icon in the top-right toolbar of Plan Details that opens plans related to the current plan.

  7. Export An icon in the top-right toolbar that exports the current Plan Details form to PDF, Word, or Email.

  8. Recalculate An icon in the top-right toolbar that recalculates all rollup calculations in the plan on demand.

  9. Configure An icon in the top-right toolbar, available to administrators, for configuring the Plan Details form.

How Plan Details Fits Into OnePlan

Plan Details works closely with:

  • Work Plan — Metadata entered in Plan Details feeds rollup values shown in the Work Plan, so incomplete Plan Details data reduces the accuracy of Work Plan rollups.
  • Financial Plan and Resource PlanPlan Details sits alongside these modules as one of the core Planning Modules available within a plan.
  • Reporting (Status Reports, Insights, Visualizer, Power BI Dashboards) — Plan-level metadata captured in Plan Details is a key input to these reporting surfaces. (Needs SME confirmation on exactly which Plan Details fields feed which reporting surfaces.)

Common Scenarios: When to Use Plan Details

You might use Plan Details in OnePlan to:

  • Enter or update plan metadata so that Work Plan rollups and reports reflect accurate, current information.
  • Navigate a plan through its process steps and review its Process History to confirm when it moved between stages.
  • Use the Plan Contextual Menu to share a plan, add it to your favorites, or copy its hierarchy to a new or existing plan.
  • Review split or trend fields to understand how costs are divided or how key metrics are changing over time.
