OnePlan Migration Tool - Project Online

  • Updated

Below are some best practices and recommendations when using the OnePlan Migration Tool with Project Online data.

If you are attempting to perform a large scale, complex Project Online to OnePlan migration, please contact your OnePlan advisor for more information.

Project Online Data

You can download you Project Online data using Excel and OData. Once your data is in Excel you can transform it to match the proper template that can be used in the Migration Tool. In most cases, this transformation can be as simple as copy/paste and find/replace.

Resources

Project Online resources will become OnePlan resources.

Projects

Project Online projects will become OnePlan plans.

In OnePlan, you can create different plan types. Plan types are similar to Enterprise Project Types in Project Online. In OnePlan, plan types can be hierarchical, in essence you can create a program/project hierarchy. While Project Online does not support "programs", in case you have some kind of custom solution, you can create a project hierarchy in OnePlan using the Migration Tool and organizing your data properly for that in your source file.

Schedules

Project Online schedules will become OnePlan Work Plans (schedules).

Baselines

Task baselines in Project Online will be baselines in OnePlan.

Timesheets

Importing timesheet data is not supported in OnePlan. However, this data can be imported as "actual hours". In most cases that data is required to maintain continuity. If the actual data is required from Project Online for historical reasons, then download and store that data in a database and merge it with the OnePlan timesheets using a report.

One solution is to the OneAnalytics integration, that downloads and stores OnePlan data in a Microsoft SQL database. You can add your historical data to this database for complete reporting.

Material and Cost Resources

While there are many different scenarios, in many cases cost resources in Project Online would be used to represent cost at a point in time. The Financial Plan in OnePlan was designed to handle that and more complex scenarios. It is recommended to migrate your cost data into the Financial Plan.

SharePoint Project Site Content

OnePlan supports adding different item types inside each plan. This enables you to store Risks, Issues, and any other SharePoint lists you used to have in your SharePoint project site with your plan inside OnePlan.

You can use the Migration Tool to migrate this data.

You can also choose to keep your existing Project sites in SharePoint Online. In this case, you can link the existing project site to the plan in OnePlan. The Migration Tool supports this scenario as well.

Project Desktop

If you are planning to use Project Desktop in your future solution, we recommend that you import your schedules using our Project Connector Office add-in. This method will ensure that you will continue to use Project Desktop as your scheduling engine and connect your projects to OnePlan plans.

In this scenario, you still should use the resource, resource plan and financial plan import via the Migration Tool and only create the plan and the schedule using Project Desktop.
