For many years, Microsoft has supported multiple authentication methods for SharePoint Online - some more secure than others. Beginning in 2026, Microsoft will discontinue support for the less secure options.
Going forward, Service Principal–based authentication will be the only supported method. Please review this article for guidance on how to configure it.
If you are currently using any of the authentication methods listed below, please take action now and reconfigure your existing integration to prevent service disruptions.
SharePoint Legacy Authentication Option
End of life: January 31, 2026
If you are using the username and password to connect to SharePoint from your SharePoint or tabular integration, when you are using what Microsoft calls Legacy Authentication. This required a non MFA enabled account with SharePoint access.
Microsoft will not support this legacy authentication option in SharePoint beyond January 31, 2026.
SharePoint Modern Authentication Option
End of life: April 2, 2026
If you are using the "check here if you are using the SharePoint Modern Authentication" checkbox to connect to SharePoint from your SharePoint or tabular integration, then you are using what Microsoft calls Modern Authentication. This required creating an app inside SharePoint.
Microsoft will not support the modern authentication option in SharePoint beyond April 2, 2026.
