Purpose
This article provides an overview of the configuration process to setup the Microsoft Project Connector for OnePlan.
What you will accomplish
After reading this article you will understand all of the necessary steps required to configure the Microsoft Project app that can be installed within your OnePlan group, and be able to configure the Office add-in installed within the Microsoft Project program.
Requirements
You are a OnePlan Administrator / Owner
Background
The Microsoft Project app connects your Microsoft Project Professional (MPP) file directly to OnePlan by installing an Office add-in into your Microsoft Project program. This integration allows project managers to continue building and managing detailed schedules in Microsoft Project while synchronizing that data with OnePlan for portfolio-level visibility and decision-making.
OnePlan is a cloud-based portfolio and project management platform designed to help organizations manage work from a strategic perspective. While Microsoft Project excels at schedule management, it does not provide the portfolio, resource, and financial insights needed for enterprise-wide planning. OnePlan fills that gap.
Through the integration, project schedules created in Microsoft Project are synced into OnePlan, where they become part of a centralized portfolio. This enables organizations to:
- Align projects with strategic goals and priorities
- View resource demand and capacity across all projects
- Track financials such as cost, budget, and forecasts
- Improve collaboration and visibility beyond the project schedule
- Use dashboards and reporting to support informed decision-making
By combining Microsoft Project’s scheduling strengths with OnePlan’s strategic portfolio capabilities, the integration allows teams to work in the tools they know while giving leaders the insights they need to manage portfolios, optimize resources, and drive business outcomes.
Steps to Set Up the Microsoft Project App
1. Install the Microsoft Project App into OnePlan
Before anything else, you must ensure that the Microsoft Project app is installed in your OnePlan environment. See How do I Add Apps to OnePlan? for instructions. Once the app is installed, you will have access to all of the necessary configuration settings to setup the integration.
2. Download and Install the Office Add-In for Microsoft Project
Next, download and install the Office add-in installer from https://oneplan.ai/integrations/microsoft-project/. This connector enables the direct synchronization between Microsoft Project and OnePlan projects.
See Install the Office Add-In for Microsoft Project for instructions on how to configure the connector on your local machine.
3. Configure Field Mappings for the Microsoft Project App
Once all of the required tools are installed and configured, you need to ensure the fields mappings between OnePlan and Microsoft Project are properly configured so data flows between the systems as you intend.
See Configure Field Mappings for the Microsoft Project App for instructions.
4. Use the Office Add-In to Sync Data with OnePlan
Now you are all set up and ready to begin using the Microsoft Project App.
See Use the Office Add-In within Microsoft Project for instructions.
