This article explains how to create a new Work Field in OnePlan, including the general settings that apply to every field type and the field-specific settings that vary by type.
What you will accomplish By the end of this article, you will be able to create a Work Field, configure its general and field-specific settings, and understand which optional advanced features can be enabled.
Before You Begin: Creating Work Fields
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- A OnePlan account with Owner (administrator) permissions
- Access to the Work Type Form Editor — see Work Fields - Access Work Fields Configuration
- (Optional) Understanding of which field type you need — see Work Fields - Types of Work Fields
Why This Matters: Creating Work Fields
Work Fields capture the metadata your team needs on a work item — status, effort, assignee, due date, and any custom attributes. When creating a Work Field, you configure general settings that apply to all field types (name, description, required/read-only, Work Type availability) and field-specific settings that vary by type (character limits, decimal places, choices, and so on).
Step-by-Step: Creating a New Work Field
Task: Create the Field
- Open the Work Type Form Editor for the desired Work Type. See Work Fields - Access Work Fields Configuration.
- Select Create New. The New Work
Field form opens.
- Complete the General tab of the form:
- Field Name — Enter a name for the field.
- Description — Enter a description of the field’s function, or how users should interact with it. This appears as a tooltip.
- Internal Name — Auto-populates once you save the new field; displays the internal (back-end) field name.
- Field Type — Select the field type. See Work Fields - Types of Work Fields.
- Default Value — Enter a default value, if applicable.
- Required — Check the checkbox if the field is required.
- Read Only — Check the checkbox if the field is read-only.
- Available Work Types — Select one or more Work Types where the field is available. If none are selected, the field is available for all Work Types.
- Select Save.
Note: The field type cannot be changed after a Work Field is created.
Task: Configure Field-Specific Settings
Configuration options change depending on the Field Type selected in the previous task:
- Text — Character Limit, Multi Line
- Number — Decimal Places, Field Aggregate, Show as Percent
- Currency — Field Aggregate
- Date — Field Aggregate (Min or Max)
- Choice / Multi Choice — Choices (manual entry or bulk upload)
- User — Filter to limit available users
- YesNo, Rich Text, Hyperlink — No additional configuration required
See Work Fields - Types of Work Fields for details about field behavior and usage.
Task: (Optional) Configure Advanced Field Features
The following features are optional and can be enabled during creation or after a field exists:
- Calculations — Automatically compute a value using a formula. Work Fields support the Calculated type only. See Work Fields - Configure Field Calculations.
- Conditional Formatting — Visually highlight values based on rules. See Work Fields - Configure Field Formats.
