This article explains how OnePlan integrates with Microsoft Planner Premium. 

With this integration, teams can build project plans in Planner Premium and bring them into OnePlan - unlocking powerful features like:

  • Resource planning

About Project for the Web

Microsoft is currently renaming Project for the Web to Microsoft Planner. This integration supports Planner Premium, which is the new name for for what was previously known as Project for the Web. 

Basic vs. Premium

Microsoft Planner offers two plan types:

  • Basic: Great for simple task management.
  • Premium: Includes advanced features like Timeline and Goals.

Visibility into Execution Across Teams

Use Case: Portfolio managers need visibility in OnePlan into work being tracked in Microsoft Planner Premium by product, marketing, or design teams to ensure alignment with strategic initiatives.
Value: Keeps leadership informed on execution status without needing teams to change tools or update multiple systems.

Strategic Initiative Tracking

Use Case: Tasks and boards in Microsoft Planner Premium once loaded into OnePlan can be mapped to specific strategic initiatives.
Value: Ensures that day-to-day activities in Microsoft Planner Premium are contributing to broader business goals, enabling better prioritization and resource allocation.

Cross-Team Resource Allocation

Use Case: Tasks in Microsoft Planner Premium are linked to specific team members, and their effort is synced into OnePlan to analyze workload across multiple teams and regions.
Value: Enables portfolio leaders to balance workloads, avoid over-allocation, and plan staffing needs based on real-time execution data.

Forecasting Future Resource Needs

Use Case: Upcoming Microsoft Planner Premium work is used to forecast resource demand in OnePlan by skillset, team, or location.

Mind the Gap

This integration has the following known limitations:

  • Tasks cannot be updated in Microsoft Planner Premium (not yet supported by Microsoft APIs) from OnePlan.
  • Custom field cannot be updated in OnePlan from Microsoft Planner Premium (not yet supported by Microsoft APIs).
  • Deleting a task in OnePlan will not remove it from Microsoft Planner Premium.
