Direct Answer: How to Use Advanced Edit for Work Items in OnePlan
To use Advanced Edit for a work item in OnePlan, right-click the work item in the Work Plan List and select Advanced Edit from the contextual menu. The Task information dialog opens with General, Predecessors, Successors, Work, Material, Cost, and Advanced tabs, giving you a complete, detailed view of the work item, including resource assignments broken out by type.
What This Article Covers: Advanced Edit
This article explains each tab in the Advanced Edit dialog for a work item: General, Predecessors, Successors, Work, Material, Cost, and Advanced. Advanced Edit is the more detailed alternative to Quick Edit, and it is the only place where resource assignments are broken out by Work, Material, and Cost type.
What you will accomplish
By the end of this article, you will be able to open Advanced Edit for any work item and manage its schedule fields, dependencies, resource assignments by type, and advanced scheduling settings.
Before You Begin: Advanced Edit
- A OnePlan account with edit access to the Work Plan.
- Familiarity with How to Use Quick Edit for Work Items in OnePlan, which covers the faster, lighter-weight edit menu.
- An understanding of how resources are categorized as Work, Material, or Cost type. See How to Add and Categorize Generic Resources in OnePlan.
Why This Matters: Advanced Edit
Full detail in one dialog
Advanced Edit consolidates schedule fields, dependency relationships, resource assignments, and advanced configuration into a single dialog, so you do not need to switch between multiple views to manage a work item.
Resource assignments broken out by type
Unlike Quick Edit's single Resources tab, Advanced Edit separates resource assignments into Work, Material, and Cost tabs. This gives you a clear, type-specific view of who and what is assigned to a task, including quantities and costs for Material and Cost resources.
Scheduling and dependency control
The Predecessors and Successors tabs give you full control over task dependencies directly from the same dialog used to manage the rest of the work item's details.
Step-by-Step: Using Advanced Edit for Work Items in OnePlan
Task: Open Advanced Edit for a Work Item
Next to the desired task, click ☰ > Advanced Edit. The Task information dialog opens with the full set of Advanced Edit tabs.
Task: Review and Update General Information
The General tab shows the work item's core schedule fields: Name, % Complete, and Effort at the top, followed by a Dates section with Start, Finish, and Duration. Your fields may differ depending on your environment's configuration.
- Name — The work item's name.
- % Complete — How much of the work item is complete.
- Effort — The total effort scheduled for the work item.
- Start — The work item's scheduled start date.
- Finish — The work item's scheduled finish date.
- Duration — The scheduled duration of the work item.
Task: Manage Predecessors and Successors
Use the Predecessors tab to see any existing predecessor relationships, for which this item is the dependent task. The table lists each relationship's Name, Type, Lag, and Active status. Click the + icon to add a new predecessor link, or select a row and click the trash icon to remove it.
You can also add Lag and Lead time to the dependency in the Lag field.
Note: To apply Lead to the dependency, enter a negative value into the Lag field.
Use the Successors tab to see any existing successor relationships, for which this item is the predecessor task. The table lists each relationship's Name, Type, Lag, and Active status. Click the + icon to add a new successor link, or select a row and click the trash icon to remove it.
You can also add Lag and Lead time to the dependency in the Lag field.
Note: To apply Lead to the dependency, enter a negative value into the Lag field.
Note: For more on dependency relationships, see Task Dependencies (source URL to be added when published).
Task: Manage Work, Material, and Cost Resource Assignments
Use the Work tab to see all Work type resources assigned to the task, including individual resources and Teams, listed with Resource and Units columns. Click into the Units column for a resource to update its assigned percentage.
Note: Cost and rate for a Team assignment come from the Team's own cost and rate settings in the Resource Center, not from its individual members.
Use the Material tab to see all Material type resources assigned to the task, listed with Resource, Quantity, Cost, and Total columns. Add or remove material resources and update the Quantity assigned; Total is calculated automatically from Quantity and Cost.
Use the Cost tab to see all Cost type resources assigned to the task, listed with Resource and Cost columns. Add or remove cost resources and update the Cost assigned.
Note: A resource's type (Work, Material, or Cost) is set when it is created and cannot be changed afterward. See How to Add and Categorize Generic Resources in OnePlan.
Task: Update Advanced Fields
View or edit the following fields on the Advanced tab as needed. Your fields may differ depending on your environment's configuration.
- Calendar — The calendar used to schedule the work item. Defaults to Default calendar.
- Scheduling Mode — The scheduling mode applied to the item (for example, Fixed Duration).
- Constraint Type — The scheduling constraint applied to the item (for example, Start No Earlier Than).
- Constraint Date — The date associated with the constraint type.
- Ignore Resource Calendar — Toggle to schedule the item without regard to the individual calendars of its assigned resources.
- Effort Driven — Toggle to control whether the item's duration recalculates automatically based on effort and assigned resources.
- Rollup — Toggle to control whether this item's values roll up to its parent item.
- Inactive — Toggle to exclude the item from scheduling. Inactive items do not push their linked tasks or roll up their attributes to parent items.
- Manually Scheduled — Toggle to control whether the item is manually or automatically scheduled.
Frequently Asked Questions: Advanced Edit
Q: What is the difference between Quick Edit and Advanced Edit?
A: In OnePlan, Quick Edit gives you a faster view of general information, a single combined Resources tab, dependencies, and advanced scheduling settings. Advanced Edit gives you the same general information plus separate Predecessors and Successors tabs, resource assignments broken out by Work, Material, and Cost type, and an Advanced tab with additional scheduling fields.
Q: Where do I see Material or Cost resources assigned to a task?
A: In OnePlan, Material and Cost type resource assignments only appear in Advanced Edit, on the dedicated Material and Cost tabs. Quick Edit shows all resource types together on a single Resources tab without breaking them out by type.
Q: Can I change a resource's type from the Work, Material, or Cost tabs?
A: In OnePlan, no. A resource's type is set when the resource is created and cannot be changed afterward. If a resource needs a different type, create a new generic resource with the correct type.
Q: Can Teams be assigned from Advanced Edit?
A: In OnePlan, yes. Teams appear alongside individual resources on the Work tab. Cost and rate for a Team assignment come from the Team's own settings in the Resource Center rather than from individual team members.
Q: Where do predecessor and successor relationships show in Advanced Edit?
A: In OnePlan, predecessor relationships appear on the Predecessors tab and successor relationships appear on the Successors tab, each with Add and Remove controls.
