Direct Answer: How Work Field Configuration Works in OnePlan
Configuring Work Fields in OnePlan is a five-stage process: access the Work Type Form Editor for the Work Type you want to configure, plan your field structure, create new fields, optionally configure advanced features like calculations and formats, and maintain fields over time as your needs change.

Work Field Configuration at a Glance
- Access the Work Type Form Editor for the Work Type you want to configure.
- Plan your field structure — what to capture, which Work Types need it, whether it’s required or read-only.
- Create the new Work Field and configure its general and field-specific settings.
- (Optional) Configure advanced features — calculations and conditional formatting.
- Maintain the field over time — edit settings as needs change, or delete it when it’s no longer needed.
Step 1: Access the Work Type Form Editor
Work Fields are configured directly from the Work Type Form Editor, accessed from within a specific plan rather than from a global admin page:
- Open a plan of the desired Plan Type, then go to Work Plan > List. [[administration/fields/Work Fields - Guided Workflow - Create and Edit Work Fields/attachments/workplanlist.png]]
- Select the ellipsis (…) menu, then select Configure. [[administration/fields/Work Fields - Guided Workflow - Create and Edit Work Fields/attachments/workplanconfig.png]]
- Select the Form Editor tab, then choose the Work Type from the Work Type menu.

Step 2: Plan Your Field Structure
Before creating fields, consider:
- What information do you need to capture? Think about the data points essential for tracking and reporting on this Work Type.
- Which Work Types need this field? Some fields apply to all Work Types; others are specific to one (e.g., Likelihood for a Risk, but not a Task).
- Is this field required or optional?
- Should users be able to edit this field? Calculated or system-generated fields are usually read-only.
- Do you need a calculation? Work Fields support the Calculated type only.
Step 3: Create New Work Fields
Creating a Work Field involves selecting a field type, configuring general and field-specific settings, and defining Work Type availability.

Step 4: Configure Advanced Options (Optional)
Field Calculations
Work Fields can automatically compute a value from other fields on the same work item using the Calculated type — for example, deriving a State field from a Status field. Rollup and Trend are Plan Field-only.
→ Learn more: Work Fields - Configure Field Calculations
Field Formats
Apply visual styling (colors, tooltips) based on field values, using the same underlying Format Rules system shared with Plan Fields.

Step 5: Maintain Existing Fields
Update field settings as your organization’s needs evolve, or delete a field that’s no longer needed.
Note: Field type cannot be changed after creation. Deleting a field permanently removes all data stored in it.

Frequently Asked Questions: Work Field Configuration
Q: Is this the same editor used for Plan Fields? A: No — in OnePlan, Plan Fields use the Plan Details Form Editor, while Work Fields use the Work Type Form Editor. Both are part of the same drag-and-drop form-building experience, but they configure different fields. See Plan Fields - Guided Workflow - Create and Edit Plan Fields.
Q: Do all Work Types share the same Work Fields? A: Not necessarily. In OnePlan, a field’s Available Work Types setting determines which Work Types it appears on — it can be scoped to one Work Type or left open to all of them.
