Direct Answer: What Is the Strategy Area in OnePlan?
The Strategy area in OnePlan is where you define your organization’s strategic Objectives and the measurable Key Results that show progress toward them. You then associate Projects, Epics, Engagements, Products, and Applications with each Key Result, so you can see which work supports each goal. You review progress in the List, Board, Roadmap, and Dashboard views, which you open by selecting Strategy in the left navigation.
What This Article Covers: Strategy
This article explains what the Strategy area is, how Objectives, Key Results, and associated work fit together, and how to review progress. For step-by-step instructions, see the how-to articles listed in What to Do Next: Strategy.
What you will understand: After reading this article, you will understand how Objectives, Key Results, and associated work connect in OnePlan, how progress is measured, and where to go to create and review each.
Who This Article Is For: Strategy
- Executives and steering committee members who want to see whether strategy is on track.
- Strategy and portfolio leaders who define and maintain Objectives and Key Results.
- Project, program, and product leaders who need to show how their work supports strategic goals.
- Administrators evaluating the Strategy area for a OnePlan group.
Why This Matters: Strategy
Context: A Line of Sight from Strategy to Work
The Strategy area connects the goals your organization sets to the work it funds and delivers. Instead of reviewing strategy separately from execution, leaders can see each Objective, the Key Results that measure it, and the plans that support those Key Results in one place.
Context: Measurable Progress
Every Key Result has a target and a current value, so progress toward an Objective is measured rather than described. Leaders can review progress at any time, and can compare Objectives and Key Results by status, priority, and business unit.
Understanding Strategy in OnePlan
Context: How Objectives, Key Results, and Work Fit Together
The Strategy area is organized as a hierarchy. An
Objective describes what the organization aims to
achieve. Each Objective has one or more Key Results
that measure progress toward it. Each Key Result can have associated
Projects, Epics,
Engagements, Products, and
Applications that deliver it. ### Context: How Progress Is
Measured
Each Key Result has a Key Result Metric with a
Unit of Measure, Target Type,
Target Number, and Current Number. You
enter the Current Number manually.
OnePlan calculates the Current Metric,
the percentage of progress toward the target. A Target
Type of Increase is used when the value should
rise to reach the target, and Decrease when it should
fall. Each Key Result also has a Key Result Status
section for Accomplishments and Additional
Comments. ### Context: Value, Financials, and Risk
on an Objective
An Objective also connects strategy to value. Its Details include Financials (budget, forecast budget, and actuals), Value (benefit target, benefit forecast, and benefit realized), and Performance (net value, ROI, and Current Metric). Benefits and Risks can be associated with an Objective, so leaders can see the value and exposure that sit behind each goal. Objective Prioritization fields, such as Strategic Alignment and Risk Reduction, produce a Prioritization Score that helps compare Objectives. ![[Objective Details.png]] ### Context: Where Strategy Is Available
Strategy is one of the areas in the left navigation of OnePlan. Areas can be shown or hidden for a group, and each solution template turns on the areas that fit its approach. For example, the Strategic Execution Management template shows Strategy and Status Reports. If you do not see Strategy, contact your OnePlan administrator. Administrators can show or hide areas using Setup in the left navigation. See Create and Manage Areas.
Key Components of Strategy
Objectives An Objective is a high-level strategic goal. Objectives sit at the top of the Strategy hierarchy and have a State, Status, Priority, Executive Sponsor, Manager, Business Unit, and Investment Category, along with schedule, financial, value, performance, and prioritization details. Objectives and Key Results move through the process steps Proposed, Active, and Closed.
Key Results A Key Result is a measurable outcome that shows progress toward an Objective. Each Key Result has a timeline, a metric, a status section, and a list of associated plans.
Associated Plans Projects, Epics, Engagements, Products, and Applications that are linked to a Key Result. They appear beneath the Key Result in the Strategy list and in the Associated Plans table on the Key Result.
List View Shows Objectives, Key Results, and associated plans as an expandable hierarchy with columns such as State, Status, Business Unit, Priority, Estimated End, Current Metric, and Prioritization Score.
Board View Shows Key Results as cards grouped into columns by Objective, colored by status.
Roadmap View Shows Objectives on a timeline, grouped by a field such as Business Unit and colored by a field such as Overall Health.
Dashboard View Provides four dashboards: Objective Portfolio, Objective Progress, Key Result Portfolio, and Key Result Progress. ![[using-oneplan/my-strategy/Strategy in OnePlan - Overview/attachments/Strategy Dashboard.png]]
Reporting Options The contextual menu on any Objective or Key Result includes a Reporting submenu with Status Reports, Visualize, Insights, and Dashboard, so you can report on, visualize, and analyze the plan from within Strategy. Visualize shows the dependencies and relationships between Objectives, Key Results, and the work associated with them, which helps leaders see how a change to a goal affects the work beneath it.
How Strategy Fits Into OnePlan
Strategy works closely with:
- Plans and Portfolios — Projects, Epics, Engagements, Products, and Applications are regular OnePlan plans. Associating them with a Key Result adds strategic context without changing how they are planned and delivered.
- Status Reports — Status reporting gives plan owners a structured way to share progress. See Status Reports in OnePlan - Overview.
- Solution templates — The Strategic Execution Management solution template is built around connecting strategy to execution. See Strategic Execution Management Solution Template in OnePlan - Overview.
Common Scenarios: Strategy
You might use Strategy in OnePlan to:
- Show a steering committee which initiatives and investments support each strategic Objective.
- Track quantifiable Key Results, such as a target number of customers or a percentage improvement, and see which are on track.
- Review all Objectives by business unit on a roadmap to see when each runs and how healthy it is.
- Identify which Objectives or Key Results are off track using the dashboards.
- Add a new Project to a Key Result so its work is tied to a strategic goal from the start.
