Work Automations - Configure a Copy or Create Work Item Action

Purpose

This article explains how to configure the Copy / Create Work Item action in Work Plan automations.
Use the Copy / Create Work Item action to automatically create a new work item when the automation is triggered. You can:

  • Copy values from the original work item, or
  • Create a fully new work item with custom values.

How to Configure the Send Notification Action

  1. Click Add Automation Action > Select Copy / Create Work Item from the drop-down. The configuration panel will open on the right.

  2. Complete the form.
    • Work Type: Select the Work Type you want to create.
    • Allow Duplicates: Check this box if the automation should be able to create multiple copies of the same item in the target location.
    • Assigned To: Choose who the new work item will be assigned to:
      • Plan Field = Select a plan‑level user field. Any user assigned to that field will receive the notification.

      • Work Field = Select a work‑level user field. Any user assigned to that field will receive the notification.

      • Copy Assigned Resources = Copies the Assigned Resources from the original work item.
      • Shared-With Level = Choose one or more Share-With permission levels. All users with the selected level(s) will receive the notification.

      • Specific User = Select one or more individual users to receive the notification.

      • Specific Team = Select one or more resource teams to receive the notification.

    • Copy All: Check to copy all values from the original item into the new one.
    • Set Field Values: Define individual field values for the new work item:
      • Field = Choose the field you want to set.
      • Copy = Check to copy the field value from the original work item.
      • Value = If not copying, enter the value you want applied. You may add multiple fields using Add Field.

  3. Click Update to save the automation.

Next Steps

If you’re finished configuring your automation, click Save to finalize it.
If you want to extend your automation, you can add additional actions. While there’s no strict limit on how many actions you can include, we recommend keeping the number manageable to maintain optimal performance. Explore the other available action types to continue building out your automation.
