MCP Server in OnePlan - Overview

Direct Answer: What Is the MCP Server in OnePlan?

The OnePlan MCP Server connects AI assistants such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and ChatGPT to your OnePlan data. Once connected, you can find plans, check resource availability, review financials, manage work items, and act on approvals by asking in plain language, without opening OnePlan. Your assistant always works as you: it can only see and change what you can already see and change in OnePlan, and your OnePlan permissions, locks, and read-only settings always apply.

Note: The OnePlan MCP Server is available in preview to approved customers. Features and available tools may change during the preview. To request access, contact your Customer Success Manager.

What This Article Covers: MCP Server

This article explains what the OnePlan MCP Server is, how it works, what you can do with it, and which tools it provides. It also covers the limits that apply to every assistant that connects to OnePlan.

What you will understand After reading this article, you will understand how the OnePlan MCP Server connects your AI assistant to OnePlan, which assistants are supported, and which tasks your assistant can complete for you.

Who This Article Is For: MCP Server

This article is intended for:

  • End users who want to work with OnePlan data from an AI assistant
  • Group administrators evaluating or setting up the OnePlan MCP Server for their organization

This article is conceptual. For setup steps, see What to Do Next: MCP Server.

Why This Matters: MCP Server

Context: Work Where You Already Are

The OnePlan MCP Server brings OnePlan into the AI assistant you already use. You can ask about plans, people, and budgets from Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Teams, or ChatGPT instead of switching apps.

Context: Answers Across Modules

One question can combine portfolio, resource, financial, and work plan data. For example: “Which over-budget projects also have over-allocated people?”

Context: Act, Not Just Read

Your assistant can update plans, move allocations, log risks, update your task status, and approve requests from the conversation. Most changes can be previewed as a before-and-after summary before anything is saved.

Context: Same Security as OnePlan

Each user signs in with their own OnePlan account using OAuth. Your assistant can only reach the data your OnePlan permissions allow, in the group you chose when you signed in.

Understanding the MCP Server in OnePlan

What Is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use tools from other business systems. An MCP server publishes a set of tools, such as “search plans” or “update a financial plan.” The assistant reads your request, picks the right tools, and calls them for you. You do not need to know the tool names.

How the OnePlan MCP Server Is Delivered

OnePlan hosts the MCP server for you, so there is nothing to install. A OnePlan group administrator and your AI platform administrator connect your assistant to OnePlan once. After that, each user connects with their own OnePlan account.

Supported AI Assistants

Assistant Supported plans
Claude Free (one custom connector), Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise
Microsoft Copilot Through an agent built in Copilot Studio, used in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Microsoft Teams
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu (web only)

What You Can Do by Module

Portfolio

  • Find plans by name, plan type, parent, or field values
  • View a plan’s details, current process step, and available next steps
  • Explore the hierarchy, such as the projects under a program
  • Create plans, update plan fields, or move a plan to its next step

Resource Management

  • Search resources and resource teams, and find people who can fill a generic resource
  • Check capacity, allocations, time off, and remaining availability
  • Compare candidates on availability, cost rate, or fields
  • Review and compare resource plans by cost type
  • Add or edit allocations, shift them to new dates, replace a resource, or fulfill a generic resource

Financial Management

  • View budget, forecast, or actuals by cost category, over time or in total
  • Compare cost types to find variances
  • Add or edit values for one period or spread values across a range
  • Shift a cost category’s allocation by whole months

Work Plan

  • List the work item types on a plan, such as risks, issues, decisions, and tasks
  • Browse and filter work items, view details and dependencies, and see the items beneath an item
  • See who is assigned to work items
  • Create work items in a plan’s logs and update fields on non-scheduled items

My Work and Approvals

  • See your own assigned work items across plans
  • Submit status updates on your items for Plan Owner review
  • See approvals waiting on you, and approve or reject them

Note: Resource Management, Financial Management, and Work Plan tools only work when those modules are enabled in your OnePlan group.

Rules That Always Apply

  • Your permissions apply. If you can’t see a plan, resource, or field in OnePlan, your assistant can’t either.
  • One group at a time. You choose a OnePlan group when you sign in. To work in another group, reconnect and choose that group.
  • Preview first. Financial, resource, work item, status, and approval changes support a preview. Plan creation and plan field updates are saved immediately, so review the assistant’s summary before you confirm.
  • Locked data stays locked. Periods on or before a cost type’s status date, read-only cost types (such as rollup and combined cost types), and plans locked by a Lock Field can be viewed but not changed.
  • Some data is view-only. Synced plans are read-only. Scheduled items (tasks on the schedule) can’t be created or edited, except for status updates on your own items. Nothing can be deleted.
  • Status updates need review. Updates to your own work items go to the Plan Owner, who accepts or rejects them.
  • Approval decisions are final. An approve or reject decision can’t be undone and advances the plan’s workflow.
  • Last save wins. If someone else edits the same data at the same time, the most recent change is kept.
  • Time periods. Financial shifts are in whole months. Weekly views are only available if your group stores data daily.
  • Currency is shown as stored in OnePlan, with no conversion.
