Direct Answer: How MCP Server Configuration Works in OnePlan
Configuring the OnePlan MCP Server connects an AI assistant such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot, or ChatGPT to your OnePlan group. The process starts when your organization is approved for preview access. A OnePlan group administrator then allows the assistant in OnePlan, either by adding consent to the preconfigured Claude app on the Global tab of Browse App Registrations, or by creating an app registration under Register Custom Apps. Your AI platform administrator adds OnePlan as a connector or tool in the assistant, tests the connection, and makes it available to users. The process ends when each user connects with their own OnePlan account and starts asking questions.
Note: The OnePlan MCP Server is available in preview to approved customers. Features and available tools may change during the preview. To request access, contact your Customer Success Manager.
What This Article Covers: MCP Server Configuration
This article explains the end-to-end process for connecting an AI assistant to OnePlan through the OnePlan MCP Server, including which tasks happen in OnePlan, which happen in the assistant, and who is involved at each stage.
What you will accomplish After reading this article, you will understand every stage of MCP Server setup and know which How-To article to follow for your AI assistant.
Who This Article Is For: MCP Server Configuration
This article is intended for:
- OnePlan group administrators who allow AI assistants to sign users in to OnePlan
- AI platform administrators, such as Claude organization Owners, Copilot Studio makers, or ChatGPT workspace admins
- IT and security teams planning an MCP Server rollout
Setup usually needs both a OnePlan group administrator and an administrator for your AI assistant. For detailed steps, see the linked How-To articles in each step.
MCP Server Configuration at a Glance
- Get Preview Access — Your organization is approved for the OnePlan MCP Server preview.
- Allow Your AI Assistant in OnePlan — Add consent to the preconfigured Claude app, or create an app registration for your assistant.
- Add OnePlan to Your AI Assistant — Add the OnePlan MCP Server as a connector, tool, or plugin in Claude, Copilot Studio, or ChatGPT.
- Test the Connection — Sign in and confirm that OnePlan data comes back.
- Roll Out to Users — Users connect with their own OnePlan account.
- Manage or Remove Access (Ongoing) — Rotate secrets, add groups, or disconnect an assistant.
Step 1: Get Preview Access — MCP Server Configuration
In the access stage of MCP Server configuration in OnePlan, your organization is approved to use the OnePlan MCP Server preview.
- Contact your Customer Success Manager to request access and for full details.
- Confirm which OnePlan groups and which AI assistants your organization plans to use.
- Identify the AI platform administrator who will add OnePlan to your assistant.
Step 2: Allow Your AI Assistant in OnePlan — MCP Server Configuration
In the authorization stage of MCP Server configuration in OnePlan, a group administrator tells OnePlan which AI assistant is allowed to sign users in. This is done under Register Custom Apps from your profile avatar.
| Assistant | What to do in OnePlan |
|---|---|
| Claude | Add consent to the preconfigured Claude app (recommended), or create your own app registration. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Create an app registration as a confidential client (with a Client Secret). |
| ChatGPT | Create an app registration using the callback URL that ChatGPT generates. |
Key concept: Each OnePlan group allows assistants independently. Repeat this step in every group that should be available to the assistant. An app registration with Organization scope can be shared so other groups only need to add consent.
For step-by-step instructions, see How to Create an App Registration for the MCP Server in OnePlan and How to Enable a Custom App in OnePlan.
Step 3: Add OnePlan to Your AI Assistant — MCP Server Configuration
In the connection stage of MCP Server configuration in OnePlan, your AI platform administrator adds the OnePlan MCP Server address for your region to the assistant and enters the sign-in details from Step 2.
| Assistant | Where OnePlan is added |
|---|---|
| Claude | Organization settings > Connectors (Team and Enterprise), or Customize > Connectors (Free, Pro, and Max) |
| Microsoft Copilot | As a Model Context Protocol tool on an agent in Copilot Studio, then published to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Teams |
| ChatGPT | As a custom MCP server in ChatGPT Plugins (Business, Enterprise, and Edu) |

Step 4: Test the Connection — MCP Server Configuration
In the testing stage of MCP Server configuration in OnePlan, an administrator signs in through the assistant and confirms that OnePlan data comes back.
- Connect to OnePlan, sign in, and choose your group.
- Ask a simple question, such as “Using OnePlan, list 5 plans I have access to.”
- If sign-in fails with a redirect or callback error, check that the callback URL in OnePlan matches the assistant’s callback URL exactly.
Step 5: Roll Out to Users — MCP Server Configuration
In the rollout stage of MCP Server configuration in OnePlan, users connect the assistant with their own OnePlan account.
- Share How to Connect Your AI Assistant to OnePlan Using the MCP Server with your users.
- Each user signs in once, chooses a OnePlan group on the Authorize Access screen, and selects Continue.
- Share MCP Server Use Cases in OnePlan - Overview so users have prompts to start with.
Note: Your assistant always works as the signed-in user. It can only see and change what that user can see and change in OnePlan.
Step 6: Manage or Remove Access — MCP Server Configuration (Ongoing)
In the management stage of MCP Server configuration in OnePlan, administrators maintain the connection over time.
- Rotate secret on an app registration if a Client Secret is lost or exposed, then update the assistant.
- Edit an app registration to add or replace callback URLs.
- Remove Consent on the preconfigured Claude app, or Revoke your app registration, to stop an assistant from signing users in to your group.
- Refresh the tool list in your assistant when new OnePlan tools are released, if your assistant caches tools.
For step-by-step instructions, see How to Manage Custom Apps in OnePlan.
Common Variations: MCP Server Configuration
Variation: Claude with the Preconfigured Claude App
In this variation, the group administrator adds consent to the preconfigured Claude app in OnePlan (found on the Global tab of Browse App Registrations), and the Claude Owner selects Use Claude’s published identity when adding the connector. You don’t need to create an app registration or enter a callback URL. This is the recommended path for Claude.
Variation: Several OnePlan Groups
In this variation, the assistant needs access to more than one OnePlan group. Create the app registration with Organization scope, then have a group administrator in each additional group add consent from Browse App Registrations. Users choose one group each time they sign in.
Frequently Asked Questions: MCP Server Configuration
Q: Who needs to be involved to set up the OnePlan MCP Server? A: In OnePlan, setup needs a OnePlan group administrator to allow the assistant under Register Custom Apps, plus an administrator for your AI assistant, such as a Claude Owner, a Copilot Studio maker, or a ChatGPT workspace admin.
Q: Do users need to install anything to use the OnePlan MCP Server? A: No. In OnePlan, the MCP Server is hosted for you. After setup, each user connects from their AI assistant and signs in with their own OnePlan account.
Q: How do I make the OnePlan MCP Server available in more than one group? A: In OnePlan, create the app registration with Organization scope, then have a group administrator in each other group select + > Browse App Registrations, open the Organization tab, select the app, and select Add Consent. For Claude, add consent to the preconfigured Claude app in each group.
Q: How do I disconnect an AI assistant from OnePlan for everyone? A: In OnePlan, select Remove Consent on the preconfigured Claude app, or select Revoke on your own app registration under Register Custom Apps. Revoking an app registration stops every connection that uses it.
